What is chia?
While chia is a fairly common food in North America, it’s pretty novel to other continents, including Europe. Chia seeds are tiny, edible, black or white seeds from the Salvia hispanica plant. Native to central and southern Mexico, these seeds have been on the menu for centuries, though perhaps they are best-known for their use in the iconic 80s Chia pets.
Is chia nutritious?
Chia seeds are a true superfood, filled to the brim with valuable nutrients to boost your cat’s health, energy level, and endurance. Tiny as chia seeds may be, they are packed with fibre, antioxidants, protein (14%), vitamins A, B, E, and D, calcium, and essential minerals.
How does chia benefit my cat?
Chia seeds pack a ton of protein, especially for a plant source. All those proteins, combined with a high fibre content, help your cat feel full for longer, which is great for felines that are a little on the heavy side. In addition, Chia is an excellent source of α-linolenic acid, a plant-based form of omega-3 that helps promote heart health, aids digestion, has certain anti-inflammatory properties, aids in cell and tissue damage repair, and decreases the risk of bone fractures. Finally, chia seeds are highly absorbent, and can therefore help your kitty to stay hydrated, as well as promote their digestive health. Talk about a superfood!
