1. Adopt, don’t shop
The first – and for many people most obvious – way to help cats in need is by adopting one from a local animal shelter or rescue organization. However, adding a feline friend to your household is quite a commitment that will inevitably bring about many changes. Luckily, there are many other great ways in which you can help.
2. Become a foster family
Do you love having a cat at home, but feel like you want to help more than just one feline? Why not inquire about becoming a foster family? This means that you take in one or multiple cats or kittens temporarily and care for them until they are ready for a permanent adoption in another family. While saying goodbye will inevitably be tough, you play a crucial role in the lives of these felines and make the world a better place by doing so!
3. Help out at a shelter
If you want to help in a professional environment that’s specifically designed to make every cat’s life count, you could search for a job as a volunteer in a pet shelter. Many cat rescue organizations can use some extra help with tasks like cleaning, feeding, or socializing the cats, assisting in organizing events, etc. Every hour you can spare to lend a helping hand will be highly appreciated!
4. Assist in a TNR program
TNR – Trap-Neuter-Return in full – is a technique where cat-safe trap cages are set up to catch stray and feral cats so they can be neutered or spayed. Once the small wounds from this procedure have healed, the cats are returned to the place where they were found. In case the cat’s living area appears to be unsafe or otherwise inappropriate, the cats will be released in a safe place where they can live long, happy lives. This method is a great way to put a halt to the ever-growing population of stray cats roaming the planet.
5. Build shelters for street cats in your garden
Are you crafty and do you like the hands-on approach? Why don’t you craft a shelter for stray and feral cats. If you live in a dry and warm climate, any sturdy material will do, but if you live in a colder, wetter climate, you might want to put some thought into the build you’re making. Don’t forget to insulate the shelter, so the cats can stay nice and cozy, even in winter.
6. Donate what you can
If you don’t have any time to spare, then maybe you have something more materialistic to offer. Donating money to cat support organizations is always very effective and super easy, since the transfer can simply be made with your phone while lying on the couch. In case you rather not donate money but still have other relevant things lying around, you can always donate that, too! We’re talking about food, toys, litter, care products, feeding and drinking bowls, or even blankets. Inquire with your local shelter which items they can use.
7. Educate yourself and spread awareness
The least enterprising – but by no means the least important – way to help cats in need is to educate yourself about the situation and spread awareness to others. By sharing crucial information, you might alert others and inspire them to take action. This way, your impact could be just as significant! So, don’t forget to upload a picture of your cat to the Kings & Queens gallery to help us raise awareness about shelter cats.
