Why do cats hide in car engines?

Cats are instinctively attracted to warm, enclosed spaces, which makes car engine bays a perfect hiding spot. They provide shelter from harsh weather like rain, wind, hail, and snow, while the leftover heat from the engine creates a cozy, inviting environment. Unfortunately, once an engine is fired, the moving parts and intense heat become incredibly dangerous to our feline friends.

1. Tap the hood before starting

One of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent an accident is to firmly knock on the hood of your car before starting the engine. This action will create noise and vibration, alerting any cat that might be inside. You can also honk your horn to spook cats away.

2. Do a quick visual inspection

Mornings can be hectic, but a quick car inspection could save a life. Cats like to seek shelter in wheel wells as rubber tires are great insulators that help keep those paws warm, and the wells protect against snow and rain. Before starting your car, especially in colder weather, take a moment to check the wheel wells, look underneath your car, and if time permits, inspect the engine compartment as well.

3. If possible, park in a garage

A closed garage is ideal for cat safety, as it prevents any felines from sneaking in and hiding inside your car. However, parking in the shade can also help reduce the risk of accidents. In direct sunlight, your car heats up, making it especially tempting for cats to crawl into the engine bay or nap in the wheel wells.

4. Use cat repellents

If you live in an area where cats frequently roam around your car, natural repellents can help to keep them away. Scents like citrus, lavender, eucalyptus and rosemary are known to repulse cats and may be worth a try. For added security, you can try an ultrasonic cat deterrent device.

5. Provide warm alternatives

For stray or outdoor cats, offering a warm and safe alternative can make a big difference. A heated cat house or shelter can lure the felines away from your car. Such shelters can be found in pet stores, or you can even build one yourself using insulated materials.
