At what age can kittens have treats?

Kittens will start to wean when they are around 5 weeks old, but that doesn’t mean that they should be allowed to have treats right away. Only introduce your kittens to treats when they have fully transitioned to solid food, which will be around the age of 8 weeks.

Great kitten treats

Growing up is hard work, which is why kittens need more proteins, amino acids, minerals and certain vitamins than adult cats.

Catit CreamyCatit Creamy is a nutritious treat with a runny consistency that is great as a kitten’s first little snack. The nutritious paste is made with real meat and is rich in essential taurine to support your little one’s health.

If you want to introduce your kitten to solid treats, make sure to start off with small ones that are easy to chew, and bear in mind that treats should make up no more than 10% of your kitten’s daily calorie intake.

Avoid raw food items and milk

While raw foods such as meat, fish, and eggs might seem tempting for your kitten, they can harbor harmful bacteria like salmonella, potentially making your kitten very sick.

Consuming large amounts of raw eggs or fish could also lead to a vitamin B deficiency in your kitten, which may cause skin and coat issues, loss of appetite, and in severe cases, seizures.

Additionally, avoid giving any cat cow’s milk, as most felines are lactose intolerant. The only milk your kitten should drink is their mother’s milk.

Other food items to avoid

Onions, chives, garlic, coffee, tea, chocolate, and grapes are all toxic to cats, so make sure to keep those away from your kitten.

The same goes for alcoholic beverages – just a teaspoon of the stuff could cause your furry friend to become ill. Also make sure to keep cooked animal bones well out of reach of your kitten, as those can splinter when gnawed on.
